    Description

    pattern devices for handweavers
    by doramay keasbey
    1981
keasbey packs a lot of information into this book. its uniqueness lies in 2 directions; first it explores and explains hand operated or mechanical devices for introducing more patterns into your weaving. your present loom may be modified by adding long-eyed heddles, doups, shaft-switching devices and others may be contrived. also considered are dobby & drawlooms. the second part of this book is the discussion of lesser used weaves; damask, satin, beiderwand and many other intricate tricks of the trade such as; double width overshot, creating an overshot border on 4 sides and mitering the corners, supplementary warp and weft patterning and more. there is also an extensive bibliography. this book is for the serious and studious weaver who enjoys puzzling out new means for getting specific results.
Anyone who can dress a loom and pass a shuttle through the warp is invited to use this book as a guide for weaving patterns. It is intended for beginners as well as advanced weavers in the hope of stimulating experimentation with a variety of methods including use of unusual mechanisms or simple loom modifications which open up greatly expanded possibilities. A variety of weaving tools, from ordinary pick – up sticks to elaborate drawlooms, are examined here to show how each functions and to offer a choice of ways to produce a desired pattern. In order to stay within reasonable limits, the focus is on the use of floor looms, though some methods are suitable for use with other loom types as well. Some of the less usual devices are simple, easily constructed, and suitable for application to almost any loom. Attention is given to several of these. Many of the techniques and devices presented here have been used and perfected by weavers of various countries and periods in history. Others are novel applications of tested principles. The intention of this book is to offer a key to the independent exploration and to invite all who enjoy pattern weaving to share the excitement of further discovery. 125 pp.
